Food Find: The Everything Mary

15 Jun

bmI visited French Louie for their opening day serving brunch. I was impressed that on their first brunch day, they staff and menu was so spot on, with dishes like Cured Arctic Char Tartine and Creme Brûlée French Toast. But my favorite find was the “Everything Mary,” made with Everything Bagel-infused Vodka and a caraway salt rim. It has a savory oniony taste with notes of poppy and sesame, which goes well with the sweeter tomato flavor of the mix. The restaurant wasn’t sure how brunch-ers would react, so they took it off the menu, but will make it if you ask.

Where to Eat Right Now: Rucola

21 Oct

Obviously, I love a lot of restaurants in Brooklyn, but there are a handful that I recommend to everyone with a “You HAVE to go.” I’ve recently added another one of those to my list– Rucola. It’s a charming spot on a charming corner in Boerum Hill with a rustic style and a comfortable vibe. If you need a Brooklyn date spot– this is it.

The menu is super seasonal, with dishes like skate with maple roasted pumpkin, radicchio, and pomegranate, as well as duck with figs, swiss chard and turnips. I suggest starting with a selection of cheeses or meats (or both), as well as a salad. Being an Italian eatery, Rucola also has fresh pastas, like fusilli with toasted walnut pesto, tuscan kale, and pecorino.

Ok, too many things I want to recommend to you. You just have to go. Tonight. Visit Rucola at 190 Dean Street on the corner of Bond, and let me know how much you love it.

Where to Eat Right Now: Apartment 138

7 Dec

Eating brunch at Apartment 138 is like eating at your best friend’s perfectly decorated pad. Probably because the space used to be an apartment building! It’s cozy– with exposed brick, framed photos, and cute blue and white wall paper– and the food is just as fabulous. I’m a fan of the brunch deal, $12 for your choice of a botomless cup of Stumptown coffee, a mimosa, bloody mary, or juice, and an entree. Although the menu is filled with frittatas, warm biscuits, and open faced egg sandwiches, I always go for the omelette.

In the warm months, take a seat in the back garden, but for now enjoy the ambiance of the apartment-y indoor seating. Before you leave, take a peak at the bathrooms– the wallpaper is classified ads with circled and noted apartments for rent, of course. Visit Apartment 138 for brunch this weekend at 138 Smith Street in Boerum Hill.
