Food Find: The Everything Mary

15 Jun

bmI visited French Louie for their opening day serving brunch. I was impressed that on their first brunch day, they staff and menu was so spot on, with dishes like Cured Arctic Char Tartine and Creme Brûlée French Toast. But my favorite find was the “Everything Mary,” made with Everything Bagel-infused Vodka and a caraway salt rim. It has a savory oniony taste with notes of poppy and sesame, which goes well with the sweeter tomato flavor of the mix. The restaurant wasn’t sure how brunch-ers would react, so they took it off the menu, but will make it if you ask.

3 Brooklyn Brunch Dishes to Try Right Now

13 Feb

I’m brunching my way through the borough and always on the lookout for new brunch must-eats… or drinks. In my latest brunch outings, I’ve come across three dishes to order right now.

1. Wild Mushroom, Leek & Goat Cheese Frittata at Bocca Lupo

I’m a regular at Bocca Lupo for dinner and their wine selection, but recently visited for brunch and discovered the mushroom frittata, by far one of the most hearty vegetarian brunch dishes. It’s thick and packed with earthy mushrooms, creamy goat cheese, and a light leek flavor. Definitely a good choice for all-weekend energy. It’s so filling that you probably don’t need the grilled toast on top– but I’m not complaining.

2. Baked Eggs at The Vanderbilt

Not only does this dish contain baked eggs, but it’s also a warm bowl filled with grits, kale, butternut squash, and cheddar. It’s rich and decadent in a savory way. And while I’m not usually a grits person, The Vanderbilt created the perfect combo of kale, squash and sharp cheddar. Pair it with the Sriracha brussels sprouts, another can’t miss dish.

3. Bloody Mary at Henry Public

No, it’s not a dish, technically, but it’s a such a flavorful drink that it might as well be. Henry Public is doing the Bloody Mary right– with shallot vodka, tomato, horseradish, celery bitters, and plenty of spice. The garnish is beautiful too; the drink is topped with skewered layers of pickles and radishes.

3 Breakfast Dishes to Try at Nightingale 9

24 Nov

The Carroll Gardens Vietnamese hotspot Nightingale 9 made its debut last Winter with a stellar catfish dish, Caramel Berkshire Pork, and unique popsicles for dessert. Then, they moved onto lunch with bahn mi sandwiches and pho. Now, Chef Rob Newton has created a brand new breakfast menu, served Tuesday to Sunday 9am to 3pm.

Here are 3 dishes to check out.

Drool-Worthy Dish: Brunch Time

31 Oct

If you usually head to Sweet Chick for their fried chicken and waffles, you might want to consider switching it up next time. The hearty Black Bean Cake and Scramble is worth ordering– and it’s hard to believe it’s meatless. The dish is served with arugula, sour cream, black pepper, and parsley, and finishes with a spicy kick. Pair it with a bloody Mary for the ultimate brunch.

Becoming Brooklyn Eats LA

1 Oct

On a recent quick LA excursion, I was determined to discover some of the best Los Angeles eats and drinks in just two days of travel. Somehow, I managed to pack in a few hearty meals, and picked out some of my favorite dishes along the way.

The food highlight of the trip was my dinner at Son of a Gun, which ended in this Italian Hamburger– an ice cream sandwich made with a brioche bun, chocolate ice cream, caramel, and sea salt. If you go, be sure to also try the lobster roll, octopus salad, and smoked mahi fish dip. Just be prepared to wait on a weekend evening.

On a hunt for a brunch spot, I came across Red Hill, a comfy and casual spot with refreshing vegetable juices, and an indulgent mole with a yam biscuit, egg, avocado, tomato and pickled cabbage. I expected to stand in a crowd outside the restaurant in a brunch-craving crowd like I do in New York, but surprisingly, brunch didn’t seem like “a thing” there.

Next, I visited Mohawk Bend, a bar with 72 beers on tap, an extensive wine list, and an enticing list of unique cocktails. I went for something refreshing after my spicy mole,  an “Agua Fresca” concocted with watermelon juice, citrus, and vodka.

On my last LA morning, I discovered Millie’s Cafe, a diner-esque spot in Silver Lake, and ordered the massive green burrito,  filled with eggs, veggies and cheese, and topped with a green sauce and guacamole. I couldn’t help but agree with my LA friends on the superiority of West Coast Mexican food.

Next visit, I’m hoping for more dining time.

Sweet Chick Serving Brunch THIS Weekend.

18 Apr

Brunch is a crucial part of my Saturday and Sunday ritual, so I was pumped to hear that new Southern spot Sweet Chick will start serving brunch this weekend.

In addition to their house specialty and namesake dish — perfectly crisp and golden Chicken and Waffles — Sweet Chick will introduce a brunch menu of Southern-inspired American fare. That means House-Smoked Pork Hash & Poached Egg (with a Carolina-style spice rub), Cheddar-laced Shrimp & Grits, and chili and cumin-spiced Black Bean Cake & Scramble. On the sweeter side, choose from the fluffy Stack of Pancakes with Blueberry Compote or the Sweet Chick Waffle with Whipped Ricotta, Seasonal Fruit, and Spiced Honey. READ THIS: They’ll have sticky buns generously slathered with cream cheese frosting! Drool.

I’m excited that they’ll also have brunch cocktails because that’s basically the best part. Sweet Chick’s brunch cocktails will include potent libations like the Bacon Bloody Mary (yes, it comes adorned with a crisp shard of house-cured bacon) and the Mint Hibiscus Margarita, made with shaved ice and Brooklyn Soda Works’ hibiscus soda.

Brunch will be served at 11am, get there early!
