5 Brooklyn Foods to Eat Before Summer Ends

We’re getting down to the last few weeks of summer, so it’s about time you started your Summer 2014 Brooklyn Food (and Drink) Bucket List. But where to begin? I have a few suggestions. Here are my top five picks.

1. Hay Rosie Ice Cream

Hay Rosie recently opened in Carroll Gardens, offering up unique ice cream flavors from Sriracha Popcorn, to Lemon Bar, and Sage Chocolate Chip. The tiny tasting room is worth a visit, and you can even stock up your freezer with their ice cream “cubes” instead of pints. I suggest the Malted Chocolate with Honeyed Peanut Butter Swirl if you’re into that kind of thing.

2. The Pines’ Yard Menu

One f my favorite Gowanus hot spots, The Pines, created a “Yard Menu” for summer, served in their charming backyard. Head over on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays for items like blistered shishito peppers, lobster rolls with bloody mary mayo, and free DIY s’mores.


3. Four & Twenty Blackbirds’ Blueberry Pie

Fresh blueberries are one of the best things to come out of summer. Four & Twenty Blackbirds has managed to elevate the blueberry pie while keeping it simple– with a crisp, buttery crust and sweet blueberry filling that oozes onto the plate with each forkful.

4. Lobster Joint’s Lobster Bloody Mary

True, you can enjoy a bloody mary anytime of year, but I prefer The Lobster Joint in Greenpoint in the summer, when I can sit in the back picnic tables with a lobster roll and lobster roll bloody mary. The spicy, horseradish-filled cocktail is topped with a giant chunk of lobster claw. Ah-mazing.


5. Alma’s Fish Tacos

Alma makes this list not only for the fish tacos (read: crispy battered fish with crunchy cabbage and radishes in a soft corn tortilla), but also for the gorgeous rooftop views of the city and the sweet frozen margaritas. It’s the ultimate summer dinner destination.




The Pines Debuts a New Fall Menu

mushroomsGowanus restaurant The Pines has changed since its September 2012 opening. They’ve changed their style, their chef, and most recently, their menu, to a Fall 2013 variation. Executive Chef John Poiarkoff creates modern American cuisine, focusing on market-sourced and house-made ingredients.

“It should feel like a dinner party hosted by a thoughtful, talented young chef,” said The Pines co-owner Sonya Farrell.

Each evening, The Pines offers 18 to 20 dishes, all for sharing. I visited for a Fall menu tasting, enjoying dishes like mackerel with uni, horseradish, and seaweed, a decadent homemade agnolotti, and (pictured here) wild chanterelle mushrooms with cabbage, cauliflower, cured boar belly, and a scallion-poblano sauce.

Each dish felt hearty and rich, but still refined, and the portions weren’t meager, like some other restaurants serving up small plates. What made the meal was the wine pairings; each glass something else I had never tasted before. Curated by Zev Rovine, the list only contains natural wines from small vintners, mostly French and Italian.

The cuisine and wine, paired with the cozy atmosphere with a mountain cabin feel makes for a unique Fall dining experience. Check out the full menu here. 


A Magical Evening at the Sud de France Tasting at The Pines

There are some nights that can only be described as “magical,” and The Sud de France Tasting at The Pines, was just that. The sparking string lights hung over The Pines’ charming backyard, with distressed wood tables draped in blue and white checkered table cloths and boxes of bright fruit and veggies covered the space. French wine flowed, to pair with each dish, as Chef Angelo Romano worked diligently in the back of the yard, taking chances with flavors every chance he had.

Sometimes the pace of a chef’s tasting can drag on, or come much too quickly, giving you little time to savor each plate, but this was spot-on, with just enough time to eat and relish each course throughly. We started the an amuse-bouche, followed by the most gorgeously-plated oyster and rose water. I’m still thinking about the second course: mussels in a velvety cheese, with hunks of warm bread. The mussels were followed by asparagus and caviar, then fourth was frog leg agnolotti– a rich and buttery pasta with an unexpected frog leg filling. The dish that seemed to get the most rave reviews amongst diners was the “Duck and a Bean,” with duck prepared three ways and two bean dipping sauces. Finally, the flavor combination least expected, the Cassoulet Gelato for dessert. Surprisingly, the flavors meshed perfectly together– a white bean gelato with a savory cake and a sweet caramel-y sauce. Somehow, Chef Romano made it work.

While the Sud De France fest is complete for this year, you can still savor the flavors and enjoy the backyard at The Pines, and follow Sud de France for future events.


Taste the Sud de France at The Pines

What does the Sud de France taste like? I’m going to find out and you can too. On Sunday, June 23 at 6:30pm, Chef Romano of The Pines Restaurant in Gowanus will cook up a 7-course wine-paired dinner in the restaurant’s backyard as part of the Sud De France Festival. It will all go down in The Pines’ backyard, which just recently opened. They say it has a “funky, laid-back European feel” which seems to pair perfectly with the South of France theme. On top of the fantastic menu, there will bea live jazz band to set the mood.  The experience is $125 per person, all inclusive.
